On one hand, the big city and life within it define Carl Zuckmayer's narrative material of the 1930s; on the other hand, he is fascinated by landscapes and their people. Thus, in 1931, he created the Christmas story set in Berlin, which serves as a variant of the birth story from A Farmer from the Taunus. In 1932, he wrote the first and only chapter of a novel titled The Village of the Gods, a loving depiction of his birthplace Nackenheim and a warmly masculine portrait of his parents. Shortly thereafter, he produced the monkey wedding set again in Berlin, where the monkey girl Colombine already alludes to the Commedia dell'arte situation with her name. A love story from 1934, whose plot he has relocated to the 18th century, is a parable about the tragic tension between duty and inclination, reflecting Carl Zuckmayer's ethical consciousness during this time.
