In a new translation that closely follows the tone of the original, the famous essay "A Room of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf is published as part of our collected works. With this essay, Woolf became a symbol of the women's movement. Women are not lacking in talent, but in the opportunity to use it. And what they need to achieve this, they must vigorously secure for themselves: financial, but above all, intellectual independence, symbolized by "A Room of One's Own." In 1938, Virginia Woolf stated in her essay "Three Guineas" that the word "feminist" should be ceremonially burned, as it was "outdated, dead, decayed." Women and men must now work together for the same cause. With the three valuable coins, she supports initiatives for the three fundamental prerequisites that women need to express themselves independently: thorough education, economic independence, and space for creative development.
