The Return of the Front Troops is dedicated to the lost generation of war returnees. In this novel, the young Free Corps officer Johannes Maus stands at the forefront, comparable to the petty bourgeois character in Heinrich Mann's "The Subject," who, in his struggle for an allegedly healthy Germany, already points to the time of National Socialism. Like the other volumes from November 1918, this novel was also created in exile and provides an initial, insightful analysis of the success of National Socialism.
