Death is my arch-enemy. Elias Canetti. Throughout his entire life, Elias Canetti (1905-1994) wanted to write this book: from 1942 until the end of his life, he made notes explicitly "against" death, supplementing them with material from philosophy, literature, ethnology, and the history of art and culture. However, he never shaped these into the planned study, nor did he, as Peter von Matt articulates in his excellent afterword, write the first sentence. Only now does what Canetti himself could not complete come to light. His moving book - primarily compiled from previously unpublished notes from his estate - is the sum of his reflections on and against death. A previously invisible major work of the Nobel laureate, who refused to accept death, has now become visible.
