"Poets and anglers pursue hidden secrets; the former seeks the fish, the latter the verse," wrote Reiner Kunze in 1974. And since one cannot live from either poetry or fishing, the poet Reiner Kunze also fished in foreign ponds, bringing many verses to shore as a translator and introducing many foreign poets to the German reader. Among the authors who became his friends, Jan Skácel stood out, whose "Wundklee" Kunze translated with great skill. For years, Kunze's translations were the only publications of the poet banned in Czechoslovakia. Both poetry and translation were forms of resistance and salvation.
