The introductory course in Tibetan was created as a supplementary text for Tibetan language instruction at the International Language Center of the University of Innsbruck for students from various fields of study without prior knowledge of Tibetan script or grammar. Since it is oriented towards the acquisition of the spoken language, exercises alternate between tones and simple phrases, each time modifying a word, its connotation, or its tense. For students who are more advanced in language acquisition, the phrases are presented consistently in Tibetan script and Wylie transliteration. The text includes short dialogues of everyday conversation in the early chapters, which become longer as language comprehension increases, each accompanied by an explanation of the grammar used in the dialogues. From the very beginning, a nuanced use of language is practiced through the application of different levels of politeness as well as the implicit connotations in auxiliary verb constructions. Since the dialogues and grammar explanations are alternated with exercises on the introduced phrases and the learning of the Tibetan script letters, the text not only provides an introduction to language use but also extensive practice in applying the learned content.
