The European airport industry is currently undergoing a profound structural transformation. Changing regulatory, societal, and economic conditions in global air traffic present new challenges for German airports as well. Declining or stagnating revenues, rising personnel costs, and increased investment needs force airports to respond to this change. As a result, there are currently numerous major construction sites at both international and German airports. These construction projects are mostly not solely for the processing of passengers; rather, leading airports are expanding in the so-called non-aviation sector to become a "shopping paradise" for travelers. In recent years, the expansion of the non-aviation sector in airport management has gained significant importance, accounting for up to 60 percent of total revenue.
