The girl Sidsel grows up in a Norwegian mountain valley in the 19th century. When her mother unexpectedly dies, Sidsel finds a new home on the farm of the farmer Kjersti. Sidsel spends her summers as a shepherdess in the alpine pastures, alongside other shepherd children and surrounded by headstrong goats, wild horses, and breathtakingly beautiful nature. This touching story follows Sidsel until she grows up and her future begins to take shape.

The Norwegian children's book classic offers a poetic, detailed, and humorously subtle insight into a bygone rural way of life, which the author Hans Aanrud (1863-1953) knew from his own childhood. The original text "Sidsel Sidsærk" was published in 1903 in Oslo and became a great success, as did the first German translation released in 1907. The book is now being retranslated and newly illustrated by Krause Verlag.
