In July 1936, when reactionary generals in Spain staged a coup against the Popular Front government that had emerged victorious from the elections on February 16, thousands of foreign volunteers rushed to the aid of the beleaguered republic. Among them were about 3,500 men and women from Germany. Other Germans supported those who wanted to advance the social revolution in Spain. Despite all differences, they shared a common goal: the fight against the threat of fascism in Europe. For the first time in Germany, this book attempts to document as many Germans as possible who fought, worked, or contributed as artists, writers, and journalists for the republic during these years in Spain. The main focus is, in any case, on the time spent in Spain, specifically when, in which unit, and with what rank the individual served.
