In London at the turn of the century, successful stockbroker Charles Strickland leads a seemingly harmonious family life. However, one day he unexpectedly abandons his family, possessions, and status to live in Paris as a painter. Uncompromising and ruthless towards all social conventions, as well as towards himself, he pursues his calling and ultimately dies in complete poverty in Tahiti. It is only after his death that his paintings are recognized as masterpieces.
