Author Information: Catherine Herbert Howell, a former employee of National Geographic, has written more than a dozen books and contributed to many others, including the groundbreaking first edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, which is now the best-selling bird identification guide in North America. She is also the author of National Geographic's Bird-watcher's Bible and Illustrated Guide to Wildlife. Howell lives in Arlington, Virginia, where she tends to the native plants in her certified habitat and engages with the Arlington Regional Master Naturalists. Dr. Jonathan Baillie is the Chief Scientist of the National Geographic Society and Senior Vice President for Grants, where he oversees funding in the fields of science and exploration. Baillie was the Director of Conservation Programs at the Zoological Society of London, where he was responsible for projects focused on endangered species.
