Slavery has accompanied human history and can be found in many social and economic systems from Asia to Europe, Africa, and America. This volume provides a concise overview of post-antique slavery, which continued almost seamlessly from the Middle Ages into modern times. In addition to the transatlantic slave trade and the Muslim trade from Africa to Asia, the presentation places a distinct emphasis on Europe: contrary to common belief, slavery was widespread in Christian Europe. A dedicated chapter also addresses the relationship between Christianity, Judaism, and Islam with regard to slavery. This results in a modern portrayal that overcomes ignorance and prevalent clichés, clearly demonstrating how widespread slavery truly was worldwide until 1800.
