Skopje Walkie Talkie: Stroll through the city and talk about it. The book addresses current societal changes in the Macedonian capital and illustrates how public space is being instrumentalized in the context of populist and nationalist power structures. With the aim of creating a new, glorious identity for the city, numerous new buildings were constructed in a short time at an estimated cost of 680 million euros. Architectural knowledge from the 1960s and 1970s, stemming from the reconstruction of Skopje after a severe earthquake, has been overwritten or destroyed, resulting in the newer buildings already appearing dilapidated. This publication brings together a long-standing artistic and political engagement of the artist Susanne Hefti and the architect Damjan Kokalevski with the urban space.
