The Way of the Heroes is the Slovak section of the European long-distance hiking trail E8. It stretches approximately 760 km from Devin in the capital city of Bratislava in the southwest, across Slovakia to the historic Dukla Pass in the northeast of the country, near the border with Poland, and commemorates the Slovak National Uprising from August to October 1944. Parts of the trail were used by partisans during that time. This hiking route is a unique blend of wilderness and culture for Central Europe. The path takes you through forested low mountain ranges in the west, over subalpine ridges with stunning panoramas in central Slovakia, and across herb-rich meadows and through sleepy villages in the east of the country. Along the way, you will encounter picturesque castle ruins, Carpathian wooden churches, and some of the most beautiful towns in Slovakia, such as the medieval Bardejov or the vibrant European culture.
