"Smart City" is the buzzword for a desirable future of cities, representing a scenario of uncontrolled data collection and surveillance, the privatization of public spaces - but also for socio-political interventions. How do the use of digital technologies and infrastructures change the current perception, production, and utilization of space in cities? This volume provides - for the first time in German - an overview of the diverse and controversial debate surrounding the "Smart City." The individual contributions discuss the potentials of digital technologies for participatory democracy, open data access, and social spatial justice. They demonstrate that the digital transformation of cities is a contested terrain among IT companies, city governments, political movements, and residents.
