For the first time, the correspondence between Nolde and Klee is published and commented on. The book, whose title references a characterization of his artist friend Nolde by Paul Klee, is released in conjunction with the exhibition "Emil Nolde" at the Zentrum Paul Klee and includes images of the works presented there, as well as the previously unpublished correspondence between the Nolde and Klee couples. The encounter with the foreign seemed to always inspire Emil Nolde's artistic work. His oeuvre indeed contains numerous references to the grotesque, the fantastic, and the exotic—a fascination he shared with Paul Klee. The grotesque allowed both artists to critically comment on contemporary events. Fantastic representations in Nolde's work arise from a serious play with the unknown and the uncanny, thus occupying a central position.
