Very early in his artistic career, Georg Baselitz showed a keen interest in printmaking. As a scholarship holder at the Villa Romana in Florence, he began collecting the Italian Mannerist Parmigianino in 1965. In an interview, he explained: "I liked printmaking for two reasons: First, it is the simplest solid way to realize an artistic idea. Second, it is made for people with little money, for ordinary people." His first etchings date back to 1963-64, woodcuts from 1966, followed by linocuts in 1977 - works that were primarily published in black and white by Fred Jahn with Johannes Gachnang in a two-volume catalog raisonné (Vol. I: 1963-1974; Vol. II: 1974-1982). Similar to his paintings and sculptures, his graphic works also address themes such as heroes, shepherds, eagles, trees, and more. This book brings together these works, fully illustrated in color and accompanied by unique texts.
