land_scope. Photographic works from Roni Horn to Thomas Ruff
English, 2018Product details
The constant land gain of photographic art. The exhibition and the catalog are dedicated to the representation of landscapes in postmodern and contemporary photography. Since the late 18th century, the art of Romanticism has shaped our perception of idyllic and sublime nature. Painters like Philipp Otto Runge, but especially Caspar David Friedrich, brought these themes into the spotlight. However, Friedrich went beyond Runge's embodiment of universal creative power in metaphysical fantasy landscapes, as he, as a brilliant technical constructor, transformed real landscape scenes into images full of symbolic meaning. Many of these paintings impress with their transcendent yet oppressive depiction of spatial vastness and emptiness. This perspective also characterizes contemporary photography, which increasingly focuses on the transformation of natural and cultivated landscapes.
