Product details

Objects at a higher level such as lamps, furniture, bicycles, typographies, and museum pedestals – the work of Mathieu Mercier, born in 1970 in Conflans-Saint-Honorine and living in Paris, winner of the Prix Marcel Duchamp (2003), confidently navigates between art and everyday culture. He frequently draws on the work of his heroes Marcel Duchamp and Piet Mondrian. Mathieu Mercier does not aim to create inaccessible art, but rather works that are "immediately descriptive and appealing." The banal everyday objects he showcases are initially simply beautiful. Mercier refers to this as "sublimation," a refinement process that elevates the objects to a higher level. This deliberate delocalization, the constant exchange between high and low, raises questions about the status of things between functionality and aesthetics.
