In contemporary art, especially in photography, the portrait remains one of the most important image contents that is continually reinterpreted. The aesthetic approaches range from documentation to staging, from the reformulation of iconographic image traditions to artistic engagement with aspects of amateur photography or abstraction as possible reflections on the subject. With this joint exhibition project, the Kunstmuseum Bonn and the Graphische Fotosammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne are addressing this complexity and relevance. While the Kunstmuseum Bonn primarily focuses on various aspects of contemporary portrait photography in Germany, encompassing artistic, conceptual, and cross-genre approaches, the Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur concentrates mainly on international series of works with a distinctive character.
