An older couple from Glasgow, Gerry and Stella Gilmore, flies to Amsterdam for an extended weekend. This little trip is meant to lift their spirits; they want to explore the city and do something for their marriage. They still love each other, knowing each other's little flaws - but during the four days, deep cracks in their relationship emerge. It becomes clear that Stella has her own agenda. This plan is connected to one of the most enchanting places in Amsterdam, the Begijnhof, and to a vow that Stella once made. Gerry, a former architect, has largely come to terms with his life, in which alcohol plays too significant a role. As their journey unfolds, an event from their shared past in Belfast, Northern Ireland, gradually pushes to the surface, something that has shaped their entire lives. By the end of the trip, it becomes evident.
