Children love to ask questions. When they are small, it's the dreaded "Why?" for parents, and as they grow older, they might ask things like: "Do animals have an unconscious?" That's when good advice is hard to come by! As if it weren't already difficult enough to explain what is meant by the unconscious. The French psychoanalyst Élisabeth Roudinesco, a recognized figure in this field, was evidently a popular and reliable source for her grandson when it came to such questions: "What exactly is the unconscious?" Or: "Where does the soul come from?" Or: "Are dreams part of reality?" Since Plato, the artistically crafted dialogue has been a proven method for vividly and understandably presenting complex issues. During the Humanism and Enlightenment periods, the philosophical-pedagogical dialogue text experienced a new flourishing, and to this day, authors often turn to this genre. Élis does as well.
