Aenne Schulte, born Anna Maria Schulte, née Mergi, was born on July 23, 1886, in Innsbruck and died on October 5, 1973, in Cologne. She was an early social democrat and social activist. Anna Maria Mergi moved to Cologne with her parents in 1888 at the age of two. Her father, the tailor Franz Mergi, was actively involved in the labor movement. Her mother, Josepha Mergi, was the second chairwoman of the Women's and Girls' Educational Association in Cologne, an organization that was banned. At the age of fourteen, Anna Maria Mergi became a member of the Workers' Cycling Association Solidarität, which distributed campaign materials in rural areas. Soon after, she became active in her union, the Central Association of Commercial Employees, in the fight for a day off on Sundays.
