It has long been known that urban expansion consumes land and threatens the cultural landscape. The separation between building land and non-building land has only partially proven to be an effective protection for the cultural landscape. Settlement development in rural communities cannot be stopped, but can at best be slowed down. This leads to a dangerous, insidious urban sprawl. On the southern shore of Lake Constance, where a largely intact, agriculturally shaped landscape is increasingly being covered by urban networks, the question of the future of this cultural landscape affects the identity of an entire region. In the search for new urban lifestyles, there is often a renewed emphasis on closer contact with the land and agricultural production. Different hybrid lifestyles can serve as a basis for innovative settlement and economic forms in the cultural landscape.
