During World War II, there were labor detachments with prisoners of war in almost every town in Germany, primarily in agriculture and forestry, construction projects, and industrial enterprises. The use of Soviet prisoners of war was carried out in violation of the provisions of the International Geneva Convention and was characterized by brutal treatment, lack of supplies, poor working conditions, and a high mortality rate. This edition documents the labor deployment of Soviet prisoners of war in its entirety. The selected sources provide a comprehensive impression of the living and working conditions of the prisoners and the actions of the Wehrmacht, civil administration, and employers. The selection is based on the evaluation of extensive source collections in relevant archives and pertains geographically to the area of the country.
