In social work, there is no doubt that the quality of the respective assistance is directly linked to the success of a professional relationship. However, there are still many uncertainties about how to facilitate this professionally. Three studies by the author convincingly demonstrate that successful assistance requires an authentic, emotionally sustainable, proximity-based, yet reflexive and professionally informed approach to diagnostics and relationship management. Furthermore, it becomes evident that assistance is particularly effective when clients who have experienced relational disruptions are given the opportunity for personal relational dimensions and moments that serve as alternative experiences to previous relational upheavals, paving the way back into social contexts. The results are connected in a framework that describes the development from a protective island experience to professional action.
