Product details

In this research paper, I argue that contrary to common beliefs, Oscar Wilde was not only a flagbearer of aestheticism but also a critic of Victorian society. This is demonstrated through my analysis of the three salon comedies 'Lady Windermere's Fan', 'An Ideal Husband', and 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. However, Wilde's social critique does not aim to bring about change in political or social injustices; rather, it is dedicated to the pursuit of truth. In the three dramas I analyze, the author primarily criticizes the Victorian upper class and addresses themes such as money, double standards, social etiquette and constraints, as well as dual identities. Furthermore, I support the thesis that Wilde intricately weaves his social critique at the levels of language, action, and form. He employs stylistic devices such as the Wildean epigram named after him or the character type of the Wildean dandy (Wilde's literary alter ego) and stylizes the conversational tone of the British upper class into a complex artistic language. My thesis is that this subtle method allows the author to critique the upper class without exposing himself.
