This introduction reconstructs the basic constitutional principles of social policy in their historical development and relates them to the current evolution of social issues. The focus is on the transformation of the core social policy concept of life situation into the socially pedagogically accessible construct of coping situation. This allows for the important policy areas relevant to social work—family, education, employment, poverty, health, and migration policy—to be made accessible for the context of social pedagogy.
