While sociobiology is still rejected by some, it is gaining an increasingly broader foundation through numerous empirical studies. Although it is no longer discussed as heatedly as in the late seventies and eighties, many of its statements and conclusions are still surrounded by misunderstandings that seem difficult to eradicate. These misunderstandings primarily concern sociobiological explanations of human behavior and are partly based on ideological prejudices. They also arise from the fact that sociobiologists use a vocabulary and methodology that are unfamiliar to many social scientists and philosophers. This book aims not only to help clarify the misunderstandings surrounding sociobiology but is also based on the conviction that sociobiology (despite some remaining weaknesses) offers an important perspective.
