Climate change is one of the main reasons for the projected further decline in global biodiversity. As part of the National Strategy for Biological Diversity, Germany has therefore set the goal of minimizing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity. Even today, various climate-induced changes in the distribution and behavior of animal and plant species can be observed. In particular, species that are adapted to colder and wetter conditions, especially specialized species with low site tolerance, are threatened by climate change. Conversely, the distribution areas of warmth-loving species may expand into Germany. In light of the expected impacts of climate change, adjustments and changes in focus in species conservation are likely to become necessary.
