Product details

The Berlin city architect Martin Wagner founded the Working Group for a Growing House in 1931, which included notable figures such as Walter Gropius, Leberecht Migge, Hans Poelzig, Hans Scharoun, and Bruno and Max Taut. As an architectural response to the Great Depression and the collapse of the construction industry, they designed serially manufactured tiny houses that could adapt to the changing familial and financial circumstances of the clients through incremental construction. Their designs for a transformable new building were documented in 1932 in the publication "The Growing House: A Contribution to the Solution of the Urban Housing Problem." This long-out-of-print book presents the political and architectural aim of adaptable housing construction. Its commented reissue marks the beginning of a publication series as part of the exhibition program on housing issues.
