Product details

The title Máj/My is inspired by the name of one of the largest department stores in Prague. In 1975, a department store named "Máj" opened on Národní Trída, the street of the people, and it retained this name until the end of the communist regime. While the spring month is commonly referred to as "Květen," "Máj" is the older and more romantic term. The British supermarket chain Tesco took over the department store in 1996 and renamed it "My" in 2009. The Czech "Máj" and the English "My" are pronounced identically. They sound the same, which was part of the neoliberal marketing strategy of the new owners. The lives of people today, after the collapse of the communist regime in the Czech Republic, are the subject of photographs by Stephanie Kiwitt. The book brings together observations of everyday life and portraits of people who have adapted to the new society.
