André Gelpke's series Sex-Theater originated in the 1970s and features performers from various sex theaters in Hamburg's St. Pauli district. "The fascination that captivated me as a photographer stemmed from the personality of the individual, the performer who was willing to bring the secret sexual fantasies of a repressed society into reality in public and only for a fee." In 1981, Sex-Theater was published as a book for the first time and quickly sold out. The edition published by Spector Books in collaboration with cpress is a reimagining of the series: with an expanded selection of images, new texts, and in a format that provides this collection of images with a contemporary stage in the book. The era that becomes visible here has come to an end. Sex-Theater captures the decline of these clubs.
