The photos in "Sunset" depict locations where people attempted to flee across the inner-German border. They come from the archive of the BStU and were taken by employees of the State Security, the police, and border soldiers of the NVA from 1961 to 1989. They range from monitoring individuals or locations, inspecting border facilities, to documenting successful or failed border crossings. In selecting the photos, the focus was not on the fate of the refugees, but rather on their escape routes. Following the pages of the book, one navigates through a labyrinth that leads through tunnels and waterways, directional signs, dead ends, train compartments, and landscapes, where historical testimony and personal imagination intertwine. For the images are - beyond their historical context - visual documents of an existential flight energy.
