He self-deprecatingly refers to himself as the "most famous unknown artist": Frank Uwe Laysiepen, alias Ulay. With the concept of transformation, he constantly creates new identities. His preferred medium is photography; initially associated with Polaroid, it has become an essential part of his artistic practice. The instant photo, which has been replaced by digital photography, is for Ulay the material of his decades-long search for the representation of life. His body continues to serve as a subject of research, on which various influences can be traced and read like on a canvas. The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is dedicating the first major overview exhibition to the artist. In parallel, a catalog will be published featuring photographs, works from performance art, and pieces that he has withheld for years, now being released for the first time.
