Product details
Seiichi Furuya's Dresden photographs from 1984/85 are a document against all odds. A Japanese man who has been an important figure in the Austrian photography scene since the early 1980s captures everyday life in the late GDR. Furuya came to Dresden as an interpreter for a Japanese construction company. His images are private—depicting a young family in their intimacy, deep fears, and happy moments. He captures the social aspects of daily life rather casually. His outsider perspective, the gaze of a stranger, has no equivalent in the artistic photography of the GDR. In 2015, Seiichi Furuya returned to Dresden for an exhibition project. New photographs emerged: images of familiar places where, thirty years later, a capitalist everyday life has taken root, and of the Pegida demonstrations that shape the image of the Elbe.
