July 4, 2012, marks a historic date for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva: the announcement of the discovery of the last predicted, yet missing, and long-sought elementary particle, the Higgs boson. A year later, during the conference of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Bielefeld, a multitude of scientists associated with the large project at CERN gather to discuss not only the discovery of the particle but also the realization and significance of such a monumental endeavor for a scientific megaproject. The Director-General of CERN, Prof. Dr. Rolf-Dieter Heuer, provides the foundation for the discussion of the many aspects involved in his opening lecture. Thus, this volume includes reports on the large-scale research itself.
