Anne Urbauer grew up on a farm in Emertsham, Upper Bavaria, which is now part of the municipality of Tacherting in the Traunstein district. She studied history, politics, sociology, and communication sciences at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and completed the German School of Journalism. From 1984, she worked as a local editor for the Münchener Abendzeitung. In 1988, she moved to the editorial team of the Hamburg magazine Tempo, where she headed the Modern Life section. From 1991 to 1999, Urbauer held the same position at the Hamburg magazine Stern.
