The internationally comparative higher education research provides very detailed country reports and comparisons, but it is often somewhat lacking in theory. The book demonstrates that the theoretical approach of Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) serves as a suitable heuristic to consistently explain empirically observable differences in higher education systems. For instance, the expected differences between coordinated and liberal market economies are evident in higher education teaching, the competencies of graduates, and in privatization. By applying this approach to the higher education sector, the book simultaneously offers the first comprehensive empirical test for the applicability of the VoC approach in a highly relevant but previously underexplored area.
