Central to her considerations is not only the new form of knowledge transfer but also the motivational power of digital games. The hope of making learning "better," meaning easier or more efficient, has led to a growing interest from researchers, educators, parents, players, and game developers in serious games and digital game-based learning. But can serious games, when used in school instruction and thus pursuing a learning objective, actually achieve the motivational effects attributed to them? How do game motivation and learning motivation relate to each other? Answers to these and other questions will be discussed based on a quantitative study of a serious game in subject teaching.
