After the death of their guerrilla leader Cochise, the Apaches continue to cause unrest. In 1875, the Chiricahua Apache Black Wolf flees from the San Carlos reservation with a group of warriors. Fearing a new war, Fort Apache immediately sends the courier Roy Clinton to Fort Bowie to warn them. On the way, he discovers a burnt-out wagon with the body of an unknown man inside. After burying him, he is nearly caught in an ambush by two Apaches. Severely wounded, he reaches the Bentley Farm. From that moment on, Clinton becomes embroiled in an extremely delicate matter.
