It has also secured its place in the school curriculum. The author, born in Osnabrück, processed the experiences of his generation during World War I in his novel, highlighting the cruelty and senselessness of war through his realistic and subjective depictions. The book is a deeply moving appeal to humanity, against forgetting and against war. The novel, which broke with the heroism of war, was burned by the Nazis in 1933. For the artist Peter Eickmeyer from Melle, it was, as he himself writes, a "matter of the heart" to adapt Remarque's work using the medium of the graphic novel.
