Born a slave in Arkansas, River Bass is a member of the United States Marshal Service and serves as sheriff in Arizona in 1875, maintaining law and order. Now he faces his toughest challenge yet: a group of runaway slaves has banded together under the leadership of the mysterious Milord, spreading terror and violence across the state, and Bass is tasked with infiltrating them and putting a stop to their actions. But when the leader of the outlaws recognizes him and his cover is blown, everything changes. The historical Bass Reeves (1838-1910) was a freed slave, a soldier, a vagabond, and the first black sheriff in United States history.
