At the end of the 18th century, due to a fateful mix-up, the young noblewoman Isabeau de Marnaye is forced to leave her homeland and embark on an adventurous journey. In this self-imposed exile, she meets and falls in love with the young Breton sailor Hoel. Their shared escape takes them from the Caribbean through the wars and prisons of Europe to the west coast of Africa, right into the horrors of slavery. Yet, despite the heavy trials, Isa would not give up this rebellious life for anything, as it leads her through all social classes of the 18th century: she loves her freedom and independence.
