Multilingualism and the coexistence of different cultures are increasingly experienced in our daily lives, but are particularly concentrated in foreign language classes. The confrontation with linguistic and cultural diversity and the constructive handling of it pose a significant challenge for learners. A reflective and awareness-raising approach can and should include the development of intercultural and symbolic competencies as well as engagement with identity-related aspects. Beate Baumann illustrates how this can be achieved and the significance of reflexivity for culture- and language-related learning processes through a didactic project in which Italian learners of German as a foreign language engaged with texts from intercultural literature in an international learning setting.
