Annegret Nydegger-Haas examines learning processes in the field of elementary algebra through student interviews in her study and develops a staged model to specify learning difficulties in applying algebra in real-life situations. Using a theoretical model, the author defines the significance of relational and operational perspectives and provides evidence that the interconnection of these two is crucial for learning and understanding algebra. The results of this study indicate that the content of algebra needs to be imbued with meaning more than is currently the case. The tasks used focus on mathematization processes that connect the two areas of arithmetic and algebra.
