Archiving refers not only to printed or electronic documents but increasingly also to data that is stored in a structured manner within database systems and needs to be preserved for long-term reuse. Today's database systems view archiving as data protection and relinquish control over the archived data. In contrast to traditional backup/recovery, application-oriented database archiving is characterized by the archiving of logical data granules, user-initiated actions, data outsourcing, and archive access. The book presents archiving and usage models and classifies concepts and implementation approaches. It delves into archiving extensions for SQL and STEP/SDAI. An ideal archive storage solution is a so-called log-structured tertiary storage system.
