From the abundance of experiences we encounter over the decades of a life in the clinic, we perceive only a small part. Most of it passes us by without leaving a trace. Initially, we notice what we are directed to by our teachers and the established teachings, which correspond to our time-bound, theoretical concepts. It already shows a good empirical talent when someone sees what no one has shown them. It is precisely the good empiricist who is compelled to recognize how much that could be apparent to us remains hidden, so that our knowledge always remains a modest patchwork, a torso in relation to the entirety of what we encounter. Ultimately, we may feel compelled to articulate and write down what we have seen and thought.
