Marc Vobker examines the relationship between automobiles and gender on three levels. As a structural category, he first investigates systematic differences between the genders in terms of car ownership and arrives at a finding of an egalitarian tendency, contrary to previous research results. In the next step, the author analyzes symbolic representations articulated by respondents in problem-centered interviews, noting highly inequality-oriented gender attributions. Finally, he critiques the widespread notion in the social sciences that automobiles are associated with a confirmation of male identity or a threat to female identity. Additionally, the car is analyzed in terms of numerous ideologizations and its appropriation beyond merely being a means of transportation.
