Christof Koch has been researching the topic of consciousness for years. In a sort of inventory, he presents the current state of research, which has significantly involved scientists like Francis Crick, Ned Block, David Chalmers, Stanislas Dehaene, Giulio Tononi, and Wolf Singer. He does not see it as a contradiction to want to explain how emotions arise using scientific, empirical methods.
